Happy Mother's Day!
Mother’s Day will be slightly different compared other years; however, it will can still be magical and unique for all mommies. We can continue to celebrate mothers, grandmothers, or aunts and shower them with gifts of love with items easily found at home. Children will have fun creating gifts for mommy and/or loved ones while targeting and improving speech and language.
Search for words! You can grab a newspaper, magazine articles, or a good ol’ fashion word search and highlight words like “strong”, “compassionate”, and “fabulous” and others that describe mom.
“The Perfect Mom” recipe list. For instance, your recipe can include two tablespoons of patience, 3 handfuls of selflessness, 4 cups of love, and a dash of humor. Remember to carefully mix all ingredients together and enjoy for the rest of your life! These activities will target attributes, sequencing, social-emotional, math, visual scanning and writing skills.
Play dress-up and sing! Put on a show for mom and loved ones by singing their favorite or Mother’s Day related songs. For inspiration and ideas, please look at list of songs provided. Don’t worry… these songs have familiar nursery rhyme tunes and lyrics. Please encourage children to play dress-up, act or sing as these activities motivate children to use their imagination, in which, expands their spontaneous utterances and language development. Have fun and put on a great show!
Get Creative! You can never go wrong with a homemade card to give to mom on her special day. Children can write beautiful messages and/or wishes to express their appreciation for mommy, aunt or grandma. They can draw mama’s favorite hobby such as running, her occupation (i.e. teacher, nurse, makeup artist), or create a bouquet of flowers with the children’s handprint. Visit the links provided below for ideas. Creating a card targets answering questions, vocabulary, and fine motor skills. Moms will treasure all gifts of love and hard work!
Facetime or call mothers, grandmothers, or aunts to practice speech and language and social skills for some virtual face to face love and interaction!
Scavenger Hunt of Mom's Favorites! Help your child learn some new descriptors by going on a descriptor scavenger hunt! Have your child find or name as many things that are you favorite things in 2 minutes. Have them describe the objects they find using descriptor adjectives and adverbs. For children who don’t know many descriptors yet, you’ll want to start with basic ones like basic colors and shapes as well as other simple descriptors like big, small, bumpy, smooth, hot, cold, etc. Have your child actually walk around and feel/listen/look for these items. That will make the concept more concrete in their minds. Vocabulary development is a huge part of learning language. The more we can expose our children to different types of vocabulary in a meaningful way, the better chance they will have of recognizing those words when they are used in their books or real life.
The PTS Team wishes all our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and caregivers a very Happy Mother’s Day!!!
