Gentle guidance from the team at Pediatric Therapy Specialists

At Pediatric Therapy Specialists, we understand that some children go through difficult or even scary medical experiences that can leave lasting fears. Medical PTSD can look like anxiety before appointments, nightmares, or refusing anything that reminds them of a hospital.

The good news is that healing is absolutely possible, with patience, safety, and support, children can learn to feel calm, confident, and in control again.

1. Rebuild Safety and Trust

  • Keep things predictable, talk through what will happen next.
  • Bring comfort items like a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small toy.
  • Stick with familiar providers, when possible, consistency builds trust.

2. Let Them Express Feelings

  • Encourage drawing, storytelling, or pretend doctor play, children often process emotions through play.
  • Gently name emotions together (“That was scary,” “You were really brave”). This helps them feel understood.

3. Practice Calming Tools

  • Try simple breathing together: “Smell the flowers… blow out the candles.”
  • Offer sensory comfort items like fidgets, headphones, or a weighted lap pad.
  • Use grounding: “Tell me 3 things you see, 2 things you can touch, 1 thing you hear.”

4. Give Control Back

  • Offer small choices (“Do you want to sit on the table or the chair?”).
  • Agree on a signal to pause (“Raise your hand if you need a break”).
  • Praise every brave moment, even tiny ones build confidence.

5. Create Positive Medical Memories

  • Plan short, low-stress “practice visits” or friendly check-ins.
  • Pair medical routines with rewards: stickers, extra playtime, or a favorite activity.

6. Get Extra Support

Our occupational therapists use play-based and sensory approaches to help children gently rebuild trust and confidence in medical settings.

If your child struggles with medical fears or anxiety, our team is here to help with compassion, patience, and care that meets them where they are.
